Mandates for RNO Professionals
by Rafael García del Carrizo
1. Prevention, Prevention, Prevention-The first obligation of all odontostomatologic professionals should be the prevention of infections of the stomatognatic device. Be conscious to any deviation in its development while doing the necessary measures so that they do not occur.
2. The fundamental objective of our therapy should consist in the obtainment of a useful and efficient masticatory device, with a balanced and functional occlusion; it is through this good function that aesthetics will be reached.
3. We should dismiss that AbiTM is a hinge. This articulation, which is the most sophisticated of the organism, consists of three fundamental movements: the Bonwill, the Walker, and the Bennet.
4. The main factor in the origin of paradontopathies is occlusal trauma and not bacterial plaque.
5. Maternal lactation is the source of the development of the stomatognatic device and if not done in an intense and lasting way, its development will be impeded with respect to nasal respiration, muscular tone, and mandibular development.
6. It is necessary to suppress vices and harmful habits (such as thumb sucking, problems with the tongue and braces), to re-educate and recuperate the masticatory function and abolished stimuli, nasal respiration and normal deglutition, etc.
7. We should act fast, with promptness, in the first periods of life. This is where the true paradontopathic prophylaxis starts as well as the majority of temporary mandibular disfunctions.
8. The selective sizing of the first dentition will be our first "device."
9. Our treatments will be done though biological, clinical, and functional means and will be as least mechanical as possible.
10. The devices will stay affixed by themselves. There is no need for hooks, as they are self-functioning.
11. What is important in any RNO treatment is a good diagnosis and prognosis. Maintaining a balanced occlusion will yield stability in results without the need for fixed or mobile retentions.
12. We should not wait for an illness or anomaly to be diagnosed, not even if the denture is deciduous. As for deciduous dentition, this is the best time to initiate treatment of any anomalies within its development.
13. Pedro Planas' rules about the development of the stomatognatic device should always be in our possession.
14. Ethologic dignosis and balanced occlusion ending with orthodontics are the extraction's worst foe, and also the shame of the specialty.
15. We should never forget that we exercise in a profession as PHYSICIANS OF THE MOUTH, and as such we should comport.
And all these mandates shall be summarized in two:
Love RNO
and balanced occlusion above all things as you would yourself.
